The Rate Gap ("we," "us," or "our") operates therategap.com. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
Free Rate Check data: When you complete the free rate check, we collect your responses (skill type, experience level, current rate, client type, client acquisition channels, biggest bottleneck, and self-description). This data is stored in aggregate form to power our Freelance Rate Index. Individual responses are not tied to your identity unless you provide your email.
Email and name: If you choose to save your results, we collect your first name and email address. This is used to deliver your saved results, send you the free Freelance Rate Report when published, and (if you opt in) send occasional follow-up emails about freelance pricing. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any email.
Payment data: If you purchase a diagnostic or bundle, payment is processed entirely by Stripe. We never see, store, or have access to your credit card number or payment details. Stripe provides us with your email address and a transaction ID for order fulfillment.
Diagnostic results: Your personalized diagnostic output is stored temporarily (up to 30 days) to allow you to access it via the success page. After 30 days, it is automatically deleted.
Analytics: We use Vercel Analytics to track aggregate site usage (page views, visitor counts). This does not use cookies or track individual users.
We use your data exclusively to: deliver the service you requested (free rate check, diagnostic, or playbook), power the aggregate Freelance Rate Index (no individual data is exposed), send the emails you signed up for, and improve the diagnostic quality over time. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for marketing purposes.
We use the following services to operate therategap.com:
Stripe (payments) — processes transactions under their own privacy policy at stripe.com/privacy. Resend (email delivery) — sends transactional and marketing emails under resend.com/legal/privacy-policy. Anthropic (content generation service) — generates diagnostic content. Your intake answers are sent to Anthropic's API for processing. Anthropic does not use API inputs for training. See anthropic.com/privacy. Vercel (hosting) — hosts the website and stores temporary diagnostic data. See vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy.
Access and deletion: You can request a copy of your data or request deletion at any time by emailing privacy@therategap.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Unsubscribe: Every email includes an unsubscribe link. Clicking it removes you from all marketing emails immediately.
GDPR (EU residents): You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict processing, and port your data. Our legal basis for processing is consent (for emails) and legitimate interest (for service delivery and aggregate analytics).
CCPA (California residents): You have the right to know what data we collect, request deletion, and opt out of any sale of data. We do not sell personal data.
Free check data (aggregate): retained indefinitely for the Rate Index. Email addresses: retained until you unsubscribe. Diagnostic results: 30 days, then auto-deleted. Payment records: retained as required by tax law (typically 7 years).
therategap.com does not use tracking cookies. We do not run Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party tracking scripts. Vercel Analytics is cookie-free.
